AQUAMARINE - BERYL

AQUAMARINE - BERYL

Aquamarine is a beryl--a relatively rare silicate mineral found in igneous and metamorphic rocks around the world--and a blue-green sister to the deep green emerald. Other beryl stones include morganite (pink), heliodor (yellow/yellow-green), goshenite (colorless) and maxixe* (deep blue). Aquamarine gems are frequently less included or fractured than emeralds, making larger stones easier to find.Color and clarity are key to the value of gemstone aquamarine (with low grade beryl often refined into the metal beryllium). Color is a defining aspect of this gemstone, which is why most aquamarines are heat-treated to remove yellow tones and enhance the bright blue hues in this stone. The natural blue and green colors of aquamarine come from ferrous iron and metallic ions. Aquamarine gemstones are found in a number of exotic places including Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan and Mozambique, and the most brilliant blue varieties of the gemstones available today come from Brazil.*Maxixe is pronounced "mashish."

GOSHENITE - BERYL

Goshenite Geological Properties

Goshenite is a member of the beryl family. Goshenite is an aluminum beryllium silicate mineral that forms in prismatic or vertically striated crystals, sometimes terminated by small pyramidal faces. Other beryl stones include morganite (pink), heliodor (yellow/yellow-green), aquamarine (blue-green), emerald (green) and maxixe (deep blue). Transparent to translucent, with a vitreous luster, goshenite is said to be the purest form of beryl, containing fewer impurities than the colored varieties.

Goshenite can be found all over the world including North and South America, China, Canada, Russia, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Northern Europe, Africa and Asia.

MORGANITE - BERYL

Morganite Geological Properties

As a beryl, morganite is transparent and has a vitreous luster. This stone is relatively free of inclusions, giving it a desirable clear appearance. Morganite is essentially colorless, but the presence of magnesium creates a pink effect while the presence of iron impurities gives a slight yellow or orange hue, combining for the iconic peachy color. Morganite is dichroic, meaning it can appear to be different colors or shades depending on the angle the stone is viewed at due to the way light is absorbed through the stone. In rare cases, morganite gemstones can display chatoyancy (cat eye effect) or asterism (exhibiting a star-like effect).

Morganite is commonly found as an "accessory mineral," meaning this gemstone grows in small quantities in the presence of other minerals, which makes it fairly rare. Usually found in cavities and granite pegmatites, morganite formations are short and tabular in structure. While a rare stone, morganite is found in many locations around the world, including large deposits in Brazil and Madagascar as well as Afghanistan, China, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Russia, Zimbabwe and the USA.

HELIODOR - GOLDEN BERYL

Heliodor and Golden Beryl are the greenish-yellow to yellow varieties of Beryl. Beryl is best known for its famous gem varieties Emerald and Aquamarine, but other varieties such as Heliodor and Golden Beryl are also used as gemstones. In a strict sense, Heliodor and Golden Beryl are distinguished by their color, where Heliodor has a greenish-yellow hue, and Golden Beryl is a purer yellow or an orange-yellow. However, in both the mineral and gemstone trade, this distinction is not usually made and both terms are interchangeable, with the term Golden Beryl being the more frequently used term in the gemstone market. The term Heliodor may also be used to describe light green, orange, and brown Beryl.

AMETHYST - QUARTZ

What is Amethyst?

Amethyst is the world's most popular purple gem. It is the purple color variety of quartz that has been used in personal adornment for over 2000 years.

Amethyst is the birthstone of February and an important New Age gem. It is used to produce faceted stones, cabochons, beads, tumbled stones, and many other items for jewelry and ornamental use.

Amethyst has a Mohs hardness of 7 and does not break by cleavage. That makes it durable enough for use in rings, bracelets, earrings, pendants, and any type of jewelry. Enormous deposits of amethyst in South America and Africa provide enough amethyst to keep the price low. Most people can easily afford amethyst.

SPINEL

GARNET

THE GARNET MINERAL GROUP

Garnet is not a single mineral, but a group contains closely related, isomorphous minerals that form a series with each other. The Garnet members form intermediary minerals between each member, and may even intergrow within a single crystal. The Garnets vary only slightly in physical properties, and some of the members may be so similar that they are indistinguishable from one another without x-ray analysis.

The common Garnets can be divided into two subgroups:
Group 1: Garnets containing aluminum (Al) as their second element.
These include Pyrope, Almandine, and Spessartine. ("Pyralspite")

Group 2: Garnets containing calcium (Ca) as their first element.
These include Uvarovite, Grossular, and Andradite. ("Ugrandite")

The members of each group freely intermingle among one another. For example, the magnesium in Pyrope may be partially replaced by some iron from Almandine or by some manganese from Spessartine. However, between the two groups of Garnets, it is much rarer for them to intermingle.
